Three Ways Becoming a Mum Made Me a Better Business Owner

I didn’t see myself as maternal. I loved my work, my freedom, my eight hours of sleep (minimum), and uninterrupted weekends with Dave. I worried a baby would derail my career, wreck my energy, and force me to choose between being a present mum and a successful business owner.

Spoiler: I was wrong. Here’s what actually happened.

→ If you’d told me 10 years ago that motherhood would improve my business, I’d have laughed and changed the subject.

When Ruby was born, time instantly became my most valuable currency. I couldn’t just “catch up later” anymore, I had to make every working hour count. That meant finally tackling the unglamorous but game-changing stuff:

  • Automations that cut down on repetitive admin
  • Client guides that answer questions before they’re even asked
  • Workflows that mean nothing falls through the cracks

The result? I saved hours every week, my clients got a smoother experience from start to finish, and I actually got to clock off without my inbox hanging over me.

1. Systems & processes stopped being optional

Before kids, I wore “doing it all” like a badge of honour. Post-kids? It became a fast-track to burnout.

I started outsourcing the tasks I didn’t enjoy or wasn’t the best at - editing overflow, admin, design tweaks - and suddenly, my business wasn’t just running more smoothly, it was thriving.

Now I have two amazing team members who help me deliver work I’m proud of, without sacrificing my family time or my sanity.

2. Outsourcing stopped feeling like a luxury

Motherhood has a way of forcing you to decide what matters most. For me, it’s building a business I love that supports my life, not the other way around. That means saying yes to projects that excite me, no to the ones that don’t fit, and designing my schedule around the things that matter most to me - at work and at home.

3. My priorities got clearer

The Takeaway

You don’t have to be a parent to make your business work harder for you. But for me, becoming a mum was the catalyst for building something more intentional, sustainable, and aligned with the life I actually want.

If you’re looking for ways to streamline, outsource, and get your time back - I promise, it’s possible.
